A Closer Look at the 10 Commandments

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
My Pastor, Brad Schmidt of City Church Fort Lauderdale,  gave a rousing sermon on the transformative nature of the gospel (see the link below - I encourage you to listen). Speaking on how the Ten Commandments fits into the Gospel, he made what I think is a significant statement by showing how the First Commandment, "You shall have no other gods before Me", is broken each time you break Commandments 2 through 10. It's true.
He set it up thus; When you put someone or something ahead of God, you are saying, "You are not the source of my life." And, with the other Commandments, you are saying God is not the source of whatever the Commandment is pointing to. I expanded on this in the sermon notes section of my bulletin. So let's have a look.
If you break the 1st Commandment, you're saying, "God is not the source of my life."
2nd Commandment, "You shall make no graven images", and if you break it, you're saying, "God is not the source of my faith."
3rd Commandment, "You shall not use the Lord's name in vain," and, if you break it, you're saying, "God is not the source of my reverence."
4th Commandment, "You shall keep the Sabbath Day and make it holy", and, if you break it, you're saying, "God is not the source of my rest."
5th Commandment, "You shall honor your father and your mother,", and, if you break it, you're saying, "God is not the source of my authority."
6th Commandment, "You shall not murder", and, if you break it, you're saying, "God is not the source of my fellowship."
7th Commandment, "You shall not commit adultery", and, if you break it, you're saying, "God is not the source of my affection".
8th Commandment, "You shall not steal", and, if you break it, you're saying, "God is not the source of my wealth."
9th Commandment, "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor", and, if you break it, you're saying, "God is not the source of my truth".
10th Commandment, "You shall not covet", and, if you break it, you're saying, "God is not the source of my satisfaction."
